…a large hawk-like bird circling overhead. The mergansers did not seem too concerned with it being so close. I noticed the dark black streak on its head and the bright white body popped against the green of the trees…

Ospreys have been on my radar for some time now. Not so uncommon in southern New Hampshire, I feel like they have always been in the vicinity. Be it literally or from someone mentioning them in conversation. And in all honestly, I did not know what an osprey looked like until I looked one up on November 2022 after having photographed one and not knowing what it was.
Now that I have seen them and know what they look like, I must say, these are striking birds. They fill the scene so completely when they are seen soaring above the water in search of a meal. A wildlife bucket list shot of mine is to photograph an osprey coming in for a fish with its wings spread back and talons extended. One of these days!
